It was a pleasure to be part of a presentation given by the dynamic duo of Ed and Ann Marie Mayuga at GO! Network on August 31. Their PR firm, AMM Communications, began in 2008, and they were recently named one of the top 25 best public relations firms in St. Louis by the St. Louis Small Business Monthly. GO! Network is a community initiative that empowers personal and professional growth through life, education and career opportunities.

The three of us shared our experiences in building a social media presence to establish credibility, exchange interesting content and make valuable connections. Several of the members took an active role in participating in the discussions, which revolved around getting started and utilizing tools to manage the process.

The platforms that I use on a regular basis include this Wordpress blog, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. With Hootsuite, I can view my Twitter and Facebook feeds and schedule posts in advance. Netvibes provides a personalized dashboard built with widgets that can be customized to show social media and news sources at a glance. Mobile applications are available on each of these platforms. For up-to-the-minute research, check out Twitter Search, Google Realtime, STLTweets and Social Mention.

Remember the days when students studied amidst hushed conversations in the library, thumbing through stacks of books that led to exciting discoveries? In some ways, blogging is an extension of that experience, and valuable content usually requires targeted research. These days, writers often create their own assignments and use the web as a primary resource. Because the information base has become so vast, there is a growing need to streamline and customize it.

According to a report on Understanding the Participatory News Consumer, the third most popular news platform is the Internet. There has been a global shift in knowledge consumption as it becomes more mobile, personalized and shared through social networks. One way to segment that news is to add customized widgets to a personal page such as the ones available from iGoogle or Netvibes.

A plethora of resources is also available on these websites:

Jurnos has a comprehensive list of websites that offer a wealth of niche news.

Newsodrome organizes the top stories on the web based on specific interests.

Alltop collects the hottest headlines and organizes them into lists.

Newsmatch is a service offered by the L.A. Times online. Image selections reveal personality traits that provide a customized news page suited to particular interests.

In April, I posted Video is You-and-Me TV, an article about the opportunity that individuals and businesses have to share their message through this fascinating medium. It featured an engaging video about how Entrepreneurs Can Change the World. Here are more discoveries...

Social Web TV, a video series that started in 2008, was early in the game. There are currently over 40 videos featuring a cast of characters who focus on the latest developments in the social web.

Steve Garfield, video blogger and author of Get Seen, mentioned The Pulse Network on Facebook. According to the information in the website, it is the first network that combines live streaming video and social media conversation. It's what's next, now!

The video interviews on The Rise to the Top, hosted by David Siteman Garland, continually provide valuable bits and pieces of information from a variety of business and social media gurus who grace the split screen.

If you want to delve into the world of video and find out more about how to record on the move, grab a bowl of Cyber popcorn and check out Production Studio in a Bag by Nate Riggs.

Where is Everyone? is an article that focuses on the history of how news has been shared over the past 210 years. Several graphs illustrate the fundamental shift from face-to-face networking to online interaction. Here's a brief overview:

1800s - networking was the most common form of communication

1900s - newspapers and magazines started circulating information, radio rocked the airwaves and television became a dominant influence

Early 2000s - the Internet created a global communication shift and social networking provided real-time news and control by the users

Where can we expect in the future?

Anyone will be able to report news
Information will often come directly from the source
Individuals will have more control over games, audio and video streaming
Communication will be more targeted, personalized and location oriented
The one thing that won't change is the value of connecting in person. After 210 years, networking is still relevant.

Electronic communication is an instantaneous and illusory contact that creates a sense of intimacy without the emotional investment that leads to close friendships. - Clifford Stoll
