SocialSTL Fabulous Facebook Fan PagesCreativity and technology are the perfect combination, and Facebook Fan pages are a great place to put them together.  After I launched Social St. Louis, a fan page dedicated to sharing social media news, I wanted to learn how to add a Welcome tab with a photo.  An article in Social Media Examiner, a favorite resource, had a step-by-step tutorial on how to customize a page with Static FBML that helped guide me through the process.  This post by Techcrunch was also helpful.

These impressive, inspirational examples take fan pages to another level:

Toy Story 3

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Alice in Wonderland

Michael Jackson

Enrique Iglesias

Queen

Vitaminwater

McDonald’s

Bud Light Lime

Porsche

Levi’s

Desigual

Keep Virginia Beautiful

On Your Own Adventures

As Facebook continues to grow as a powerful advertising medium, perhaps the tools for customization will evolve.  In the meantime, users who learn how to apply static FBML have options to separate their pages from the rest.

Sunflowers Create Photo Collages from Facebook Albums: The Sunflower Field

A year ago, a friend told me about a huge sunflower field that was blooming in west St. Louis County. We grabbed our cameras, took several photos and came back for more later in the week. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to capture something extraordinary. Right now those acres are filled with corn plants. I wrote an article about the experience, and that turned out to be one of my most popular posts…ever. Fortunately, the digital files are saved in several places to preserve those sunny memories.

The collage pictured above is a screenshot from a photo album on Social St. Louis, one of my Facebook pages. When I saw the updated album format, it was obvious that it would be perfect for creating collages. I did it by uploading the photos to Facebook, taking a web screenshot of the album page with Aviary (an amazing extension on Google Chrome) and saving it on my hard drive. It’s so easy!

Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again. – Henri Cartier Bresson
